Overview
The DWU Design Challenge for the 2026‑2027 school year targets middle school students and centers on the theme “New Energy Systems for Flight.” Participants are asked to develop concepts that explore how aircraft could be powered by alternative energy sources.
The challenge emphasizes increasing safety within the National Airspace System. Organizers highlight partnerships with NASA, the FAA, universities, and aviation industry firms, which provide technical guidance and support throughout the project.
Student teams are expected to create proposals that are both technically feasible and environmentally responsible. In addition to idea generation, the competition stresses clear communication, requiring teams to present their solutions to a panel of experts from the aerospace field.
The challenge runs for the full academic year, incorporating interim reviews and feedback sessions. At its conclusion, the most promising concepts will be recognized and may be considered for further research or development efforts.
