Temporary Flight Restriction Set for SpaceX Test Site
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the SpaceX rocket development and test facility near McGregor, Texas. The notice, designated FDC 6/3825, took effect on September 18 and will remain active through October 2. It covers a circular area with a radius of 1.5 nautical miles around the site.
The restriction is widely interpreted as a precautionary measure linked to Tesla’s scheduled reveal of the new Roadster on October 1. While the FAA has not explicitly cited the automotive event, industry observers note the close timing between the TFR and the planned unveiling.
Pilots are advised to consult the latest NOTAMs before flying in the vicinity and to avoid the designated airspace unless specifically authorized. The FAA typically issues such TFRs to protect public safety during activities that may involve hazardous materials, high‑energy tests, or large gatherings.
SpaceX continues to conduct regular engine tests at the McGregor location, supporting both its Falcon and Starship programs. The temporary airspace limitation does not appear to affect ongoing launch operations from other sites, such as the Boca Chica launch complex in Texas.
Officials expect the restriction to be lifted after the Tesla event, allowing normal air traffic to resume in the area.
